How often should an ecommerce brand send marketing emails?

There is no single right number, and anyone quoting one for every brand is guessing. The honest answer is: send as often as your engaged subscribers keep buying, and no more. Here is how to find that point for your list.

Frequency depends on the segment

Your list is not one audience. Treat it in tiers:

SegmentApproach
Recent buyers and highly engagedCan usually handle the most frequent sends.
Moderately engagedFewer, more relevant campaigns.
UnengagedLimit sending, try a win-back, then stop to protect deliverability.

Count flows as well as campaigns

A customer in a welcome series, an abandoned cart flow and your weekly campaign could receive several emails in a day. Look at the total, not each stream alone. Use flow exclusions and tools like smart sending so one person is not hit with overlapping messages.

Use data to decide

  1. Revenue per recipient by send. If it holds as you add sends, you have room.
  2. Unsubscribe and spam complaint rates. A rise after you increase cadence is a warning. See the deliverability checklist.
  3. Engagement trends using clicks and purchases, because opens are unreliable (why).

Test cadence safely

Pick a segment, increase or reduce frequency for a few weeks against a comparable group and compare revenue per recipient and unsubscribes. Change one thing at a time.

Let relevance beat volume

  • Send fewer, better emails tied to a launch, a restock or a clear reason.
  • Segment by interest and behavior instead of mailing everything to everyone (guide).
  • Offer a preference option where you can, so people choose how much they receive.

Quick answers

How often should I email my list?

It depends on your audience and content. Many ecommerce brands start with one to three campaigns a week to engaged subscribers and adjust based on revenue per recipient, unsubscribes and complaints.

Will sending more emails increase unsubscribes?

Often, if the extra emails are not relevant. Sending more to engaged segments and less to unengaged ones usually grows revenue without raising complaints.

Do automated flows count toward frequency?

Yes. Subscribers experience all emails together, so review how often a person can receive flow and campaign messages in the same week.
